Linux -> Vmware -> Windows -> Yahoo Music Engine -> Treo 650 SUCCESS!
I’m writing this listening to music from my treo synced through vmware running windows. The only real snag I ran into was keeping linux from taking over the usb device before windows could. The quick solution I came up with was to leave this running in the background:
watch -n0 "sudo rmmod visor usbserial"
I’m sure there is a better /etc/modules method but for now this works. The first band synced was Clutch
My bike rides to work and gym time will be much more entertaining now and I won’t have to spend money on a music player. Details on battery life will be in a future post.

I found your idea of using watch to solve this problem interesting. I have the same problem you do except I have a Lifedrive. It took a couple of hours, but I think I found a better solution. Of course, it may not be generally useful.
What I ended up doing was editing the file /sbin/hotplug. I simply added the line: /sbin/rmmod visor to the end of it. (well, before the exit()) So for it’s working fine.
My assumption is that each time something is hot plugged I make sure it wasn’t the visor module.
Note: I don’t need to remove the usbserial.

add the module to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist to prevent it from being auto loaded

I just got the new Treo 800w and it is great for listening to tunes with.
